This is only a sampling of what's happening in the Sarasota area - please check other sites for a more comprehensive list, as I tend to focus on danceable events. And check back as events may be listed later. Please support your venues. They cannot keep hosting dance events if you don't purchase food or drink. If you specifically want an event to be included here, please use my contact form. There is a $5 per listing per week charge.
Tuesday, July 24th:
Mattison's City Grille, at 1 N. Lemon, Sarasota - (941) 330-0440 - is featuring Klick Band, at 7 pm. Klick Band plays Rock and Classic Rock. Mattison's, an open air restaurant and bar, has a small dance floor, but if you're visiting Sarasota, you have to check it out at least once. It is the best place to see and be seen, and although dancing can be tight, it's always a good time there.
Gator Club, just across from Mattison's at 1490 Main Street, Sarasota - (941) 366-5969 - is offering Latin dancing after 9 pm upstairs.
Private Group Practice 6:30 pm at Tippecanoe Condos' Clubhouse, on Tippecanoe Trail (near Wilkenson and McIntosh). If you are a dancer and would like to improve your skills - mostly Hustle, but also West Coast, East Coast and Latin (salsa, cha cha, etc.) - fill out the contact form on the lower left to receive more information. Free, but you are welcome to bring food or drink to share.
Wednesday, July 25th:
Clasico's at 1341 N. Main Street, Sarasota - (941) 957-0700 - hosts Renecito from Cuba at 8:30 pm. Award winning Renecito plays high energy Cuban style Latin music. Salsa, cha cha, bachata and rumba are the dances you will see here. This is both a food and drink venue. Mid-range pricing, urban atmosphere. Free to enter, but you should support this venue by at least buying a drink or two.
Blue Rooster at 1525 4th Street, Sarasota - (941) 388-7539 - is featuring Al Fuller's Blues Jam. Al Fuller has been a Sarasota icon for years, having his blues jam at 5 O'Clock Club on Hillview for many of those years. The Monday night jams (Wednesdays at BR) have now moved to Blue Rooster on 4th Street, just north of Fruitville Ave. If you like to East Coast or West Coast swing, this is great music to do so. Dance floor is not that large, but adequate. This is a food and drink establishment. Mid range pricing. Southern cuisine. Free entry, but again, please support this venue with your purchases.
Gulfport Casino (813) 840-3715 is one of the world's best ballrooms, offering up social dance excitement in a picturesque beachfront setting. The Gulfport Casino Swing Night is one of the top swing dances in the U.S.A., attracting hundreds of dancers every Wednesday! The Gulfport Casino Ballroom is located in the St. Petersburg, Florida area at 5500 Shore Blvd. S., Gulfport, FL 33707. There is a bar - drinks are very reasonable - sometimes food is available for purchase. This is a great event to meet new people, as the lesson requires rotating around the room. The swing lesson at 7 is very basic and can be learned by anyone.

Catrina's Tacos and Tequila Bar at 1525 4th Street - (941) 260-9737 - is featuring Renecito from Cuba, with high energy Cuban style latin dance. Catrina's offers fresh Mexican food, a great selection of Tequilas and a full bar. Mid-price range. Charming atmosphere.
Friday, July 27th
Marina Jack on the waterfront at Main Street (941) 365-4232 is hosting Big Z Band in their lounge. For a memorable evening, you have to visit Marina Jack at least once. Beautiful views of the bay, great menu, and huge bar all contribute to one of the most notable experiences in Sarasota. Big Z, known for Motown, funk, rock and some blues, starts at 7 pm.
Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, 777 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota - (941) 953-3368 - presents Rev. Barry and the Funk at their FREE outdoor concert series. The event lasts from 5 - 9 pm, and is located on the Bayside Lawn of the Van Wezel. Bring a lawnchair or blanket; there are food vendors (outside food and drink are prohibited). This is a rain or shine event, and will move indoors in case of rain.
Saturday, July 28th
Mattison's City Grille, at 1 N. Lemon, Sarasota - (941) 330-0440 - is featuring Lisa Ridings Band from 8 pm on. Lisa is iconic in Sarasota, and one of the hardest working performers out there. She will take you from Motown to disco, to blues throughout the night. Be prepared, however, as she and her band draw quite a crowd. I've been known to dance on the sidewalk on Saturday nights.
Sarasota Event Center at 600 N. Beneva, Sarasota (941) 366-4449 is having their last Saturday of the month event, featuring Rev. Barry and the Funk. Get your tickets ($12) at Eventbrite.com or at the door. Don't be late because this venue fills fast - you will see about 500 people there easily. Great dance floor, and Rev. Barry plays funk, Motown and R&B. High energy music -- always a blast!
Sarasota Sky at 1927 Ringling Blvd, Sarasota (across from McCurdy's Comedy Club) (941) 210-3274 presents No Filter Band starting at 8 pm. This is a drink only venue. $5 cover at the door. No Filter is a high energy band that belts out music from the 60's through the millennium. Watch for their incredible drum performance!
Caddy's at the Pointe at 801 Riverside Dr. E., Bradenton (941) 708-3777 is featuring Tropical Ave Band starting at 6 pm. This is an outdoor tiki bar atmosphere with casual food, and great drinks. Tropical Ave Band performs high energy funk, Latin, R&B, rock and dance music. Not to be missed!
Sunday, July 29th
Sarasota Sky at 1927 Ringling Blvd, Sarasota (across from McCurdy's Comedy Club) (941) 210-3274 - Johnny Hammer is hosting Funky Disco from 12 pm to 6 pm. Take a break from mowing the lawn, and come and get your groove on to 70's and 80's disco. See some of the best disco dancers in the area, and maybe, just maybe, Johnny will show you a step or two.
Bring a dish to share (preferably store bought or restaurant bought). Drinks are reasonable. No charge to enter.
American Legion Post #24, 2000 75th Street W., Bradenton (941) 794-3489 - Old Fashion Dance Party with Bob Dewart Band. $7.00 Cover. Brings in a nice crowd. All kinds of dance.
