Dance, Dance, Dance!
We have all felt intimidated getting up on the dance floor, and even those of us that have been dancing for some time look across the room at that woman or man who seem like they just jumped out of a Fred Astaire movie, thinking we're not good enough to be out there.
Well, the dance floor is fair game for everyone and allows beginners and professionals to express their joy in the sport they love. Everyone has to start somewhere. There is no sport in the world that does not require dedication, training and constant practice.
Take every opportunity you can to get out on the floor. Don't be shy in asking someone to dance -- and that includes women asking men. Sure, there will be those who may be critical or overly enthusiastic in correcting your moves, but they simply forgot that they were beginners at one time. Take criticism with a grain of salt. We all can use improvement - there is no perfection in this world.
You should be dancing at least three times a week to improve your skills, with some practice at home. Pull up those YouTube videos and learn some new steps. Practice at home until you're comfortable, and then take it out to the dance floor. Suggest to your partner, whomever that may be, that you would like to share a new step that you just learned. They will be happy to practice with you in a corner somewhere.
The great thing about dancing is that it is not only fun (we've now taken our freestyling to a whole new level), but it is great exercise, great for the brain, and a great way to meet new people. New in town? Find the local dance studio and take group lessons. You will shortly find yourself being invited out with your new dance friends. Learning to dance does not have be a huge investment. Group lessons range from $8 to about $15 per lesson, and usually will continue for 4 weeks. You can come back the next month and review what you learned, and add new patterns.
My observation is that people who dance are generally happier than most of the population. We've been dancing since we were wee babes, and now we are learning to structure our dance as grownups, having fun all the way!
The great thing about dance is that you can look up places to dance wherever you go. So wrap some dancing into your next vacation. I'm a big fan of gotonight.com; simply plug in your local zipcode and see what's happening. You can find a local dance studio at almost any destination - take some lessons while you're traveling. There is no excuse not to dance every week.
Come join the happy crowd!
